Webster Technique For Pregnant Woman

Changes to the Body during Pregnancy

Couple_Pregnant.jpgThe production of another human life requires increased energy and resources and places extra demands on the mother’s body. Therefore it is of utmost importance during this time for the body to be able to complete this special task at optimum levels of nervous system communication and body function. In addition, the expectant mothers musculoskeletal system faces increased demands and is changing and adapting from week to week to accommodate the growing baby.

To accommodate rapid fetal growth and prepare for the impending birth, the mother’s body begins to secrete a hormone called Relaxin which does just what its name implies: It relaxes the blood vessels to allow for increased blood flow and oxygen to the placenta and the kidneys, allows the pelvic and abdominal cavities to expand in response to the growing baby, and in the later stages of pregnancy it relaxes the pelvic ligaments to prepare the body to give birth. Because these structures are not the only body parts affected by Relaxin, a woman may become even more susceptible to vertebral subluxations. This may cause:

  • Pain
  • Increased susceptibility to injury
  • Pelvic Dystocia- that is, difficult labor or failure to progress during labor which accounts for a large percentage of C-sections performed.
  • Abnormal fetal positioning e.g. breach presentation.

How Chiropractic can Help

As your Chiropractor I will:

  • Assess you current health status and needs through a detailed case history, consultation, and thorough examination.
  • Locate and analyze areas of vertebral subluxation.
  • Develop and implement a patient centered plan to balance your spine and help restore proper nervous system function.
  • Begin a plan of Webster care at the 35th week and beyond.

The Webster Technique – is a system of chiropractic analysis and adjustment to a woman’s pelvis that reduces nervous system interference and balances the pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments. A properly functioning nervous system and balanced pelvis, reduces the likelihood of uterine constraint and allows the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.
